The Art of Mapmaking


Mapmaking is a specialized talent that can be expanded further into other sectors of game design. However, mapmaking is not specifically just one thing; it is a set of competencies required to make a functioning map. These competencies are branched out into three major skills:

Gameplay Making

Mapmakers with this skill are able to create playable and enjoyable gameplay that all players can traverse through whenever they play the map. Making good gameplay requires thorough testing, player feedback, and prior experience with playing maps.

Decorating

Mapmakers with this skill are able to use their creativity to make decoration and details that follows the theme of their map. Decorating involves the use of special components, colors, effects, and other details that may supplement in the aesthetic value of the map. Making good decoration requires creativity, external technology proficiency, relevant theming, and taste.

Scripting

Mapmakers with this skill are proficient in programming core and custom mechanics for their map. Scripting involves Roblox Luau proficiency, optimization, and debugging. Making good scripting requires critical thinking, technical proficiency, and prior programming knowledge.
